Spray Tan Aftercare: How to Make Your Glow Last

By Victoria | Southern Glow Co. — April 16, 2026

You just got a beautiful spray tan — now what? The next 24-48 hours are critical for how your tan develops, and the days that follow determine whether it fades gracefully or goes patchy. Here's my complete aftercare guide to help you get the absolute most out of your Southern Glow Co. spray tan.

The First 8-12 Hours: Let It Develop

After your session, the DHA in the solution needs time to fully bond with your skin. For the first 8-12 hours (or the time I recommend based on your shade), avoid water completely. Don't shower, don't sweat, don't wash your hands excessively. The bronzer guide coat may look dark, but that's just a temporary cosmetic tint — your true color develops underneath.

If you notice the guide coat transferring to clothing or sheets, that's totally normal. It's surface bronzer, not your actual tan. Wear loose, dark clothing and consider laying a dark towel on your pillow.

Your First Shower

When it's time for your first rinse, use lukewarm water only — no soap, no body wash, no shampoo running down your body. Just a quick water rinse for 3-5 minutes. You'll see brown water running off; that's the guide coat, not your tan washing away. Pat dry gently with a towel. Never rub.

Your tan will look lighter after this first shower. Don't panic — it continues to develop for another 12 hours or so. By the next morning, you'll see your full, gorgeous color.

Daily Moisturizing Is Everything

This is the single most important aftercare step. Apply an oil-free, alcohol-free moisturizer twice a day — morning and night. Focus on dry areas like elbows, knees, hands, and ankles. Hydrated skin holds onto color significantly longer than dry skin. I recommend fragrance-free formulas since some fragrances contain alcohol that can strip your tan.

What to Avoid After Your Spray Tan

Hot tubs and pools: Chlorine and bromine strip spray tans fast. Avoid them for at least 48 hours, and ideally the entire life of your tan.

Long, hot showers: Keep showers short and lukewarm. Hot water opens pores and accelerates fading.

Exfoliating products: No scrubs, loofahs, or glycolic/salicylic acid products until you're ready to remove the tan.

Tight clothing: Friction from waistbands, bra straps, and socks can cause uneven wear in those areas.

Heavy exercise: Try to avoid intense sweating for the first 12 hours after your initial shower. After that, just shower promptly after workouts.

How Long Will It Last?

With this aftercare routine, your Southern Glow Co. spray tan should last 7 to 10 days. The NUDA Sunless formulas we use are specifically designed for gradual, even fading — so even as your tan winds down, it still looks natural.
