What to Wear After a Spray Tan (And What to Avoid)

What you put on after your spray tan matters more than most people realize. The wrong outfit can leave lines, streaks, or uneven patches — and that's the last thing you want after investing in a professional glow. Here's everything I tell my Southern Glow Co. clients about dressing after their session.
The Golden Rule: Loose and Dark
For the first 8-12 hours while your tan is developing, stick to loose-fitting, dark-colored clothing. The bronzer guide coat can transfer to fabric (it washes out, but it's easier to avoid the hassle). Loose clothing prevents friction lines, and dark colors won't show any transfer stains.
Best Outfit Choices Right After Your Tan
A flowy maxi dress or oversized T-shirt dress is the perfect post-tan outfit. No waistband, no tight sleeves, nothing that constricts. If it's cooler out, a loose hoodie and wide-leg joggers work great.
Slide sandals or flip-flops are a must. Regular shoes and socks will rub the tan off your feet and create sock lines that are impossible to fix once they set.
Skip the bra if possible. Bra straps and bands are notorious for leaving visible lines in a developing spray tan. If you need support, opt for a loose bralette in a dark color.
What to Wear to Bed
Sleeping in loose, dark pajamas is ideal. Some clients prefer to sleep in just an oversized dark T-shirt. Put a dark towel or old sheet on your pillow to catch any bronzer transfer. Avoid silk or satin sheets for the first night — they can cause the developing tan to slide and streak.
What to Absolutely Avoid
Tight jeans, leggings, or yoga pants are the biggest culprits for post-tan disasters. The constant friction on your legs, waist, and knees will wipe the tan unevenly and create obvious light spots.
White or light-colored clothing can pick up bronzer stains. While these typically wash out, it's smarter to avoid the risk entirely.
Rain gear and heavy jackets trap moisture against your skin, which can cause streaking during the development phase. If it's raining when you leave your session, a loose poncho is your best friend.
Underwire bras and tight underwear leave very defined lines that are almost impossible to blend out. Go commando or choose the loosest options you own.
After Your First Shower
Once you've taken your first post-tan shower, the guide coat is off and your DHA tan is set. You can return to normal clothing at this point, though I'd still recommend avoiding extremely tight waistbands for the first full day. Moisturize before getting dressed to keep the tan hydrated and smooth.
Pro Tip: Plan Your Outfit Ahead
I always tell my clients to have their post-tan outfit ready before the appointment. Lay it out, including shoes. That way you're not rummaging through your closet with wet spray tan solution on your body. A little planning goes a long way toward a flawless result.
