7 Spray Tan Myths Debunked by a Certified Artist
By Victoria | Southern Glow Co. — April 16, 2026
I hear the same misconceptions about spray tanning all the time, and honestly, most of them come from experiences people had with outdated formulas or poorly trained technicians years ago. The spray tan industry has come a long way, and it's time to set the record straight. Here are seven myths I debunk for my Georgia clients on a regular basis.
Myth 1: Spray Tans Always Look Orange
This is the big one, and it's simply not true anymore. Early self-tanners used high concentrations of DHA that reacted poorly with certain skin tones, creating that infamous orange cast. Modern professional formulas — like the NUDA Sunless products we use at Southern Glow Co. — are specifically engineered with color-correcting technology to produce warm, natural-looking tones. We also custom-blend every application to match your unique undertone, so you get a shade that looks like your skin, just sun-kissed.
Myth 2: Spray Tans Smell Terrible
Older DHA formulas did have a noticeable chemical odor during development. But premium modern solutions have largely eliminated that issue. NUDA Sunless has a light, pleasant scent, and most of my clients say they barely notice any smell at all during the development phase. It's nothing like the strong chemical odor people remember from a decade ago.
Myth 3: You Can't Shower or Get Wet
You absolutely can shower — you just need to wait for the development period first (typically 8-12 hours). After that initial rinse, you can shower daily. The key is keeping showers short and lukewarm, and following good aftercare habits. Your tan won't melt off in the rain either. It's only prolonged soaking in chlorinated water that accelerates fading.
Myth 4: Spray Tans Are Only for Light Skin
This couldn't be further from the truth. Spray tans work beautifully on all skin tones. For clients with deeper complexions, a spray tan adds warmth, evens out skin tone, and gives that gorgeous luminous quality that looks amazing in photos. I custom-blend every session, so whether you're fair-skinned or have a naturally deep complexion, the result is always flattering and natural.
Myth 5: Spray Tans Are Bad for Your Skin
DHA is FDA-approved for external cosmetic use and has been used safely for decades. The vegan, paraben-free formulas we use at Southern Glow Co. are also free from harsh chemicals, synthetic fragrances, and known irritants. Compare that to tanning beds, which expose you to concentrated UV radiation — there's simply no comparison in terms of safety.
Myth 6: Your Tan Will Be Streaky
A poorly applied tan or a drugstore self-tanner can absolutely streak. But a professional spray tan applied with the right technique, the right solution, and proper client preparation will be smooth and even. I use an HVLP spray system that provides a fine, consistent mist for seamless coverage. When clients follow the prep instructions, streaking is virtually nonexistent.
Myth 7: It's Not Worth the Money
I understand the hesitation — $70 for something that lasts a week might seem steep at first glance. But consider the alternative: tanning bed memberships cost $30-$80 per month with documented health risks, and cheap self-tanners often end up uneven and require constant reapplication. A professional spray tan gives you consistent, beautiful color with zero UV damage, and it lasts 7-10 days with proper care. For events, photos, and everyday confidence, most of my clients say it's one of their best beauty investments.
